National Championships – Day 1 Update

The New Jersey Colonials have three teams competing in the National Championships this weekend.  The Girls 16U and 19U teams are competing in Marlborough, MA while the Boys 14U Bantam Major team traveled to Charlotte, NC.  Here’s the round up of today’s action!

Boys 14U:  Perinton Youth Hockey 2, New Jersey Colonials 1 (SO) – Perinton Youth Hockey, out of Rochester, New York, earned a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Colonials to open pool play in the Liberty group. Gregory Spitznagel opened the scoring for the Colonials with 6:37 left in the second period. Anthony Agostinelli tied the game for Perinton with 3:33 to play. Matthew Gagnon scored the game-winner in the fifth round of the shootout to secure the victory for Perinton. Nicholas Anderson finished with 26 saves, and stopped four of five shots in the shootout, to earn the win in goal for Perinton. Thomas Heaney made 19 saves in net for New Jersey.  The Boys faceoff against the Dallas Stars Elite at 12:05 tomorrow afternoon. 

Girls 16U:  East Coast Wizards 4, New Jersey Colonials 1 – The Girls 16U team started the day at the New England Sports Center with a 4-1 loss to the East Coast Wizards.  Jenna Kurz tallied for the 16U team in the second period but the Wizards scored a pair in the first and third periods for the 4-1 victory.  Izabelle Samarin made 47 saves facing a barrage of 51 shots to keep the team in the game.  The 16U team plays Shattuck-St. Mary’s tomorrow afternoon at 1:50 PM as pool play continues.

New Jersey Colonials 2, Belle Tire (Michigan) 3 — Seven players registered a point for Belle Tire in a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Colonials. Elana Zingas scored what stood as the game-winner at 6:35 of the third period, but New Jersey’s Alexandra Detre made it a tense final 10 minutes with her first goal and second point of the day two minutes later. Colonials goaltender Annika Asplundh was busy in goal, stopping 44 of Belle Tire’s 47 shots.  The Colonials will play the Massachusetts Spitfires tomorrow evening at 6:10 PM.
